ABSTRACT: The Island of the Marajo, in the state of Para, region
north of Brazil, presents a low level of economic development when
compared with other regions of the country. Among others factors
that limit this development are the poor supply of energy that,
today, comes exclusively from isolated thermo-electricity plants.
This work aims at to providing a preliminary survey on the
viability of wind-energy generation in the region. The results
indicate that the best winds occur between September and November
throughout the coastal region, in the north-northeast part of the
island. For this region an average wind power density of 151 W/m²
was observed, with a shape parameter of 1.7. On the basis of the
wind data generated by the mesoscale model Eta, and using the
commercial package WAsP for wind energy analysis, we developed
some scenarios for wind energy applications in the region. The
results indicate that, in spite of fact that the island presented
a relatively modest wind potential, it could be exploited in a
co-generation scheme with the existing thermal-electricity plants
operating in the area with a 3-year payback factor. For these
scenarios, we employed an 800kW wind turbine of national
manufacture. We arrived with a potential electricity yield of
1,361 MWh/year with a Capacity Factor of 0.195. Moreover, by
displacing 4,083 m³/year of Diesel consumption for electricity
generation, the addition of wind energy could prevent an emission
of 981 ton/year of CO_2, 4.6 ton/year of SO_2, and 1.9 ton/year of
NO_x.",
